Matteo Merini

Matteo Merini (Milano, 1970) graduated in Economics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan (1996). He later specialized in Corporate Finance (SDA Bocconi, 2000). Since 2013 he has been an Italian Chartered Accountant and Statutory Auditor (Dottore Commercialista e Revisore Legale).

He is member of the U.S. National Association of Forensic Economics (NAFE,, of AAI, Italian Antitrust Association (, of UNION-IP (Union of European Practitioners in Intellectual Property, and of AIPPI – Italian Chapter (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property,

His main professional interests are in the field of forensic economics and accounting, the discipline that applies economic, accounting, and financial theories and methodologies to matters within a legal framework.
From 1998 to 2013 he has been a Partner at Luigi Prosperetti & Partners consultancy firm in Milan. Since 2014 he has opened his own professional practice, offering to its Clients and their Legal Advisers a broad range of accounting and advisory services, analyses, valuations, and opinions.
In the accounting sector, he offers consultancy services to operating companies for ordinary and extra-ordinary operations. He also offers his consultancy to liquidate companies.

In the forensic economics’ sector, he offers a broad range of services, among which:
• economic valuation of Intellectual Property damages in counterfeiting cases (lost profits, reasonable royalties, infringer’s profits, business reputation damages, consequential damages);
• assistance as Economic Expert or Witness. He has been appointed as a Party Expert in more than 50 litigation civil cases and arbitrations;
• economic valuation of companies, tangible or intangible assets;
• fairness opinions on the economic value of assets;
• assistance to Clients to receive tax benefits related to the ownership and use of IP assets (i.e. ‘patent box’; tax credits for R&D);
• assistance to Clients to the economic management and exploitation of the full potential economic benefits and value creation generated using IP assets;
• economic valuation of market structure, conduct and performance in IP antitrust cases;
• risk assessments of potential gains or liabilities damage claims.

In his professional experience, Matteo Merini has assisted several Clients in various industrial and services’ sectors, among which: automotive, aviation, banking, betting and gaming, broadcasting and media, chemicals, consumer electronics, electronic communications, construction, energy, financial sector, food industry, gas, insurance, large-scale retail, luxury and fashion, pharmaceuticals, postal services, railways, real estate, waste services, water.
Matteo Merini has a wide teaching experience in the areas of his professional interests (Università di Tor Vergata, Master in Competition and Antitrust; Istituto Universitario di Studi Europei – Torino, Master in Law and Business in Europe). From 2004 to 2015 he has also been Visiting Lecturer at the Chair of Economic Policy, Faculty of Law, University of Milan.
In 2006 he co-authored a book (in Italian) on antitrust law and economics with Prof. Luigi Prosperetti, Prof. Mario Siragusa and Matteo Beretta (Economia e diritto antitrust: un’introduzione, Carocci). In 2009 he contributed (with Eleonora Pani) to the book Intellectual Asset Management edited by Prof. Gustavo Ghidini on the valuation of IP assets. In 2010 he co-authored (with Prof. Luigi Prosperetti) an article on the economics of public procurement, which was updated in 2019.
